One of those abundant flight covers with the Tax handstamp. There is no indication that the ms 2d was paid. Perhaps they didn’t want to spoil a schoolboy’s hobby.

Lee types 105A, 105B and 105C – Unclaimed at Port Moresby/Samarai /Kulumadau. I am particularly looking for an image of 105C but if…[Read more]

Mr J M replied to the topic 1898 covers Samarai, BNG to Brisbane, Queensland in the forum PPS Members Forum 5 years ago
It has been drawn to my attention by a knowledgeable and respected auctioneer, that the letters are actually R.M.S. Could it be something to do with the Royal Mail Steamers (Steamships/Ships) ? This is more promising.

There are at least two 1898 Samarai covers addressed to PMS Box No. 127 GPO Brisbane. One is in Alan Grey’s collection and the other is with a respected dealer. I am looking for precise information for the letters PMS with the understanding that it is possibly a (Protestant/Presbyterian/?) Missionary Society but Internet searching has not provided…[Read more]

Mr J M replied to the topic Collector of Customs, Samarai handstamp in the forum PPS Members Forum 7 years, 1 month ago
It is a genuine handstamp on a 1933 OHMS cover from Samarai to Sydney. The Collector or Sub-Collector of Customs may also have been the Postmaster, especially at Daru. They were multi-tasked in those early days. Lee had to list the similar H.M. Customs Daru BNG handstamp because it was used to cancel some Queensland stamps. Please see attachments.

This handstamp is not in Roger Lee’s chapter 14 for “Non-Postal Handstamps Applied to Mail” but should be fairly common. Anyone with information please reply.

I think this card is ex Tom Belknap. Yep, Prestige Auction 113 lot 960 in 2005 and previously Christies Auction lot 846 in May 1991.

I require information on the OHMS handstamp. It has been noted recently on two Panton covers and a Davies cover. The image is courtesy of Empire Stamp Auctions (Steve Drewett). The colour of the handstamp is probably black, but on a blue envelope it appears blue. My initial thought was that the sender had been creative with his own handstamp, but…[Read more]
