Mr R P started the topic Micahel Ryan papua catalogue now available in the forum PPS Members Forum 6 years ago
To keep the promise made by Mark Robinson (Cahirman’s Message) in the last PNG Calling, the Library now includes Michael Ryan’s Papua catalogue. It’s a great summary of much of the available research, his notes on specific stamps and prices based on actual auction results (it doesn’t get more ‘real’ than that!).
An example of one page is…[Read more]

Sid started the topic PNG Wesley Covers in the forum PPS Members Forum 6 years, 1 month ago
Help – I’m trying to establish the earliest use of a Wesley cover, with or without WCS logo, in Papua New Guinea.
The 1958 – 60 issue ie.SG.18 – 24, issued 2.6.58 seems to be it. However I have a Wesley Covers not showing the logo, with an earlier issued stamp SG.16, but with a later postmark ie.13th.Dec 1959.

Mr R P replied to the topic Bainings post office in the forum PPS Members Forum 6 years, 1 month ago
Nothing definite to offer – the only clue may be that it was an agency office. Whatever company/firm had the agency may have closed at that time (I suspect it was likely to be one of the large trading firms – say, Burns Philp, Carpenters, etc).

If the members of the PPS want another auction in 2019, I will soon be needing some material to offer. I cannot ‘magic’ it out of thin air. I have nothing at present to offer. Anything accepted. Frank (PPS Auctioneer)

Mr Frank J. Wilson started the topic Bainings post office in the forum PPS Members Forum 6 years, 1 month ago
I am just doing some research on the Australian period of PNG and was wondering why Bainings post office was closed in 1953 after only being open two years? Does anyone know why?

Mr R P started the topic More on the 'Bear covers' in the forum PPS Members Forum 6 years, 1 month ago
Further to Alan Grey’s excellent article on the Sir Robert Bear covers – PNG Calling, July – pp4/5 – here’s some additional information I came across (quite by accident – amazing what you find when tidying up a cupboard!). Hopefully the attached scans from the ‘NSW Philatelist’ of May 1995 are accessible. There is more information on that cover…[Read more]

Mr R P started the topic Port Moresby wasn’t in 1917 in the forum PPS Members Forum 6 years, 1 month ago
Here’s an interesting item from the Aug 7 1917 issue of The Australian Philatelist.
There is an item (supplied by a G. Turnbull) that the legal name of Port Moresby was still Granville. He writes:
“There were two townships, Granville East and Granville West. The term ‘Port Moresby’ only applies to the harbour.”
I have no idea when Port More…[Read more]
